“What are you doing for the Super Bowl?”
I was at lunch with some friends, and we asked each other the question like we were planning for Thanksgiving. Plans, food, family, friends. The Super Bowl has really turned into a national holiday celebration, an experience as American as apple pie. Baseball may be the national past time, but there is no championship like the Super Bowl.
This is a big game for Connecticut football fans, and pits New York Giants fans against New England Patriots fans. And not just team fans. There is no love lost between Jets and Pats fans, so Jets lovers are jumping on the Giants bandwagon. And there are enough Giants detractors that another whole contingency is backing the Patriots. I’m a huge Pats fan, and CT Dad is reluctantly backing them, since his Cowboys are done for the year, and he can’t stand the Giants. See how that works?
And even if you don’t like football, there’s the food. Wings, potato skins, chili, beer. I have friends who’ve baked cakes with the team logos on the icing. And how about the commercials? They’re good enough to delay that run to the bathroom for a couple of minutes just to see the newest eTrade baby or VW ad.
Yes, Super Bowl Sunday is an experience in itself. How are many celebrating? Surprisingly, most like us are staying home, to enjoy the game without distraction. We’ll all be eating, drinking, yelling and jumping up and down with excitement in the comfort of our own homes.
Make no mistake, across the country, millions of Americans will be celebrating. Super Bowl Sunday is an experience. There’s nothing like it.
